Artisan Roast Stockbridge – A Cozy Coffee Spot in Edinburgh

Artisan Roast Stockbridge

Artisan Roast is one of my all-time favourite Coffee Spots. It started in 2007 and was the first specialty roaster in the country. Since then it has grown. Now, it has a shop in Glasgow and supplies coffee to many cafés across Scotland.

One of its newest cafés opened in 2015 in Stockbridge, a lovely part of Edinburgh. You’ll find it on Raeburn Place right on the high street. It fits in well with the local shops and wine bars. Even though it’s a new café it looks like it’s always been there.

The café has big windows and skylights. This brings in lots of natural light, which is perfect for Edinburgh’s short winter days. The outside is painted black which makes it stand out from the surrounding stone buildings.

Inside, it feels warm and a bit rustic. The floors are bare wood. The walls are painted grey and black. Most of the furniture is reused or upcycled giving the café its own character. Each Artisan Roast café has a similar style but Stockbridge still feels unique.

As you walk in the coffee bar is right in front of you. It’s made of plain wood just like the floor. On top there’s a shiny espresso machine some grinders and other brewing tools. They also serve food and their menu keeps growing.

Near the entrance they sell coffee beans and brewing gear. You can even try making their coffee at home. The layout of the café is a bit unusual. That’s because the space used to be shared with a florist. Some signs from that time are still visible. Now, there are small hidden corners and cozy seating areas to explore.

The seating is mixed and fun. There are soft sofas wooden stools and outdoor tables. Some tables are even made from old cable reels! The place feels relaxed and welcoming. The staff are friendly and really know their coffee.

Espresso Choices

Espresso Choices (image by pexel)

Their main espresso is called the Janszoon Blend. It’s been around since the start. This blend uses beans from Brazil Rwanda and Peru. The taste is yummy and sweet with chocolate and cherry flavors. It works well as a black coffee or with milk.

They also offer a seasonal single-origin espresso. This changes often and lets you taste coffee from different countries. Some are fruity others are nutty or floral. There’s always something new to try.

Filter Coffee

If you like filter coffee you’re in luck. The café has a single origin batch brew that changes regularly. The beans are roasted making them perfect for pour over methods like V60, Chemex or Aeropress. Each visit can bring a new taste experience.

Roaster’s Selection

Want to explore even more? Try their Roaster’s Selection subscription. It includes special single origin beans blends and limited-edition coffees. Each bag comes with tasting notes and stories about the farms and how the beans were processed.

Special Blends

  • Janszoon Blend: Uses beans from Brazil, Rwanda, and Peru. It’s rich, chocolaty, and perfect for espresso or French press.
  • Trigonometry Blend: Made with beans from Ethiopia and Brazil. Tastes like blueberry, raisin, and milk chocolate with a hint of ginger. Great black or with milk.
  • Cobblestone Blend: Details are limited, but it’s known for bold and unique flavors. Ask at the café for more info.

Decaf

For those avoiding caffeine, they have a Swiss Water® decaf. It’s 99.9% caffeine-free and still full of flavor. You’ll taste hints of almond, cocoa and molasses.
